Brussels – ChatGPT and Roblox have come under scrutiny from the European Commission, which may require them to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) as large platforms (gatekeepers). “I can confirm that ChatGPT and Roblox have announced that their user numbers exceed the specified thresholds, and a ‘gatekeeper’ designation is possible,” admits Thomas Reigner, spokesperson for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Digital Economy and Society. “The Commission will assess the figures” and, on that basis, will decide whether to take further action.

Those identified as ‘gatekeepers’ in the Digital Markets Act are all platforms with an annual turnover of at least 7.5 billion euros within the EU over the last three years, a market valuation exceeding 75 billion euros, at least 45 million monthly end users and 10,000 business users established in the EU.
