Brussels – It is not just Italy. A total of eight European countries (both EU and non-EU) have suspended the free movement of people and goods for public safety reasons.

The Meloni government’s announcement of the reintroduction of border controls in response to the massive influx of migrants into Ceuta comes on top of similar measures previously introduced by Italy itself (the closure of the land border with Slovenia due to migration flows along the Balkan route), and those taken by Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and Norway. In all these cases, the suspension of the Schengen rules is justified by migration flows.

The only exception is Norway: the government in Oslo fears infiltration by Russian spies and saboteurs.
