Brussels – The European Parliament is sending a delegation of seven MEPs to monitor the parliamentary elections in Serbia, scheduled for 25 October. The institution itself has announced this, explaining that the MEPs will be in the country from 22 to 26 October and will form part of the international observation mission organised by the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
The delegation, comprising parliamentarians from five countries and six political groups, will be tasked with verifying whether the election is conducted in accordance with Serbian national law and international standards. During their stay, the mission will meet with political parties, representatives of institutions, the media, electoral administration officials, and civil society representatives.
The first assessment is due to take place the day after the elections. The heads of the delegations from the European Parliament, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will, together with the ODIHR, present a joint statement setting out the preliminary findings and conclusions at a press conference.
