Immediate ceasefire in Gaza, 25 countries (including Italy) against Israel

Brussels – “Immediate, unconditional, and permanent” ceasefire, allowing the Palestinian civilian population to receive appropriate care and assistance and putting an end to an Israeli policy seen as unacceptable. The international community is trying to put pressure on the government in Tel Aviv in a joint declaration signed by 25 countries, 17 EU (Italy, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden) and eight non-EU countries (Australia, Canada, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Japan), joined by the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib. 

The absence, among the signatories of the declaration, of the United States and Germany is noteworthy. It is above all Washington’s unconditional support that allows Israel to do whatever it wants throughout the Middle East, even bombing independent and sovereign countries. However, there is division on an issue that continues to inflame the debate, with a veritable international ‘anti-Netanyahu’ coalition reiterating a firm ‘no’ to the expansionist intentions of the Israeli government. “We firmly oppose any initiative aimed at changing the territory or demography in the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” the foreign ministers of the 25 countries declared. This is a new warning against the intentions already declared a year ago to establish new settlements, which this time may not be limited to an admonishment.

“We are ready to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political path to security and peace for Israelis, Palestinians, and the entire region,” the 25 countries say, without specifying actions or measures. What emerges is a section of the international community that is effectively abandoning the leadership of the Jewish state. “The building of settlements throughout the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has been accelerated,” the statement further denounces, “while settler violence against Palestinians has increased dramatically. This must stop.” 

Netanyahu is also the subject of censure for the proposals to relocate the Palestinian population to a “humanitarian city”, considered to be “totally unacceptable” as “their permanent forced displacement is a violation of international humanitarian law”. Again, “the Israeli government’s aid distribution model is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives the citizens of Gaza of human dignity.” In this context, there is unanimous condemnation of “the trickle distribution of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, trying to meet their most basic needs for water and food.”
