Brussels – The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a financing package of €450 million for ACEA to support the modernisation and upgrading of water infrastructure in the Lazio region. A first tranche of €200 million is being announced today (27 July) and will help kick-start the investment programme. The EIB’s financing will support ACEA’s extensive investment plan for the period 2027–2030, aimed at improving water supply, treatment, and distribution services, as well as wastewater management, in the areas served in Lazio.

The funded projects include the modernisation of networks, the reduction of water losses, the digitalisation of systems, the strengthening of infrastructure interconnections and the development of solutions for the reuse of water resources, with the aim of increasing overall efficiency and resilience to climate change.
“The EIB plays a central role in supporting investment in the Italian water sector, where there is a significant need for modernisation and long-term financing,” emphasises Gelsomina Vigliotti, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank. “This operation will accelerate the implementation of investment programmes and strengthen the resilience of infrastructure.”
Italy faces a serious structural problem with water wastage, which also prompted a warning from the European Commission. The EIB’s intervention is invaluable in this regard.
