Brussels – While it is true that diesel supplies “are limited”, there is currently “no physical shortage of these products in Europe,” said the Oil Coordination Group, which met yesterday (21 October) to take stock of the fuel situation in the EU in light of recent market developments and reported the conclusions of the meeting this morning (22 October).
The meeting was attended by experts from the European Commission, the Member States, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Energy Community. The discussion focused on the impact of global geopolitical uncertainty on oil markets and the potential risks to the security of Europe’s energy supply.
Brussels is particularly concerned about the availability of diesel and aviation fuel, supplies of which remain limited. For the time being, however, there are no physical shortages within the EU. The European Commission will therefore continue to monitor developments closely, in collaboration with the Member States and the IEA, given the risk of further supply disruptions.
Regarding possible countermeasures, the Commission announced to the group that a strategic dialogue with European refineries will begin shortly, in line with the conclusions of the European Council of 15 and 16 October. The discussions will be led by the European Commissioners for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, and for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius.
During the meeting, the IEA secretariat also updated participants on the outcomes of the October 15 Governing Board meeting, in particular regarding the timely provision of the volumes of oil still envisaged under the collective action agreed in March 2026.
Brussels aims to assess the overall impact of the crisis on European markets and to coordinate any necessary measures, while maintaining regular dialogue with national governments, the IEA and industry stakeholders. For the time being, therefore, there is no physical shortage of diesel or aviation fuel, but the situation remains under scrutiny.
