M5S Europe: consistently against RearmEU; calls on everyone to take to the streets on Saturday

Today, in the European Parliament, "we voted consistently and proudly against the two reports voted in the House on foreign and defense policy."

EP Plenary session - Promoting social dialogue and collective bargaining and the right to strike in the EU

Brussels – “On Saturday, April 5, we will be in the streets with thousands of citizens to sound the alarm to this Europe of war and weapons,” the 5 Star Movement (M5S) delegation to the European Parliament announced, explaining that today (April 2) it “voted consistently and proudly against the two reports voted in the House on foreign and defense policy. The latter, in particular, is a hymn to war that calls on member countries to prepare families and young people with exercises and initiatives that make civil society participate in this war effort.”

According to the M5S delegation, it is “also shameful to approve the EP amendment welcoming the European Commission’s RearmEU plan, which allocates as much as 800 billion for military escalation and will lead to painful cuts in social spending and investment. We also voted no to the final text because it contains this amendment.”

“Even the McAllister Report on Common Foreign Policy and Security is the masterpiece of double standards,” the MEPs say: there is never a mention of the human rights violations committed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, let alone the violations of international law that Israel has carried out with its invasion of Gaza, Lebanon, and the Golan Heights in Syria.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, “The text pretends that the latest peace talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine never took place and continues in its bellicose rhetoric advocating sending weapons until Ukraine defeats Russia on the ground,” the delegation statement continues.

Gaetano Pedullà, Vice-Head of the M5S Delegation in the European Parliament, commenting on today’s vote, notes that “once again, on foreign and defense policy, the governing forces are divided, this time not into two factions but even into three. Fratelli d’Italia, in a Pilate-like manner, abstains on both texts voted in the European Parliament, the League votes against, and Forza Italia votes in favor. The majority no longer exists. Giorgia Meloni should take note of this.”
