Brussels – The supply of ammunition to Ukraine continues, and is proceeding at a fast pace, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, assured, explaining that as of today, the initiative to provide Kyiv and its army 2 million rounds of large-calibre ammunition in 2025 “has already achieved 80 percent of its target.” It means that around 1.6 million munitions have already been delivered. An achievement that, given the timetable, allows one to look with some optimism at the EU’s commitments.
The supply of 2 million munitions to Ukraine is part of the initiative Kallas launched to support the country. However, EU member states harshly criticized the program that was then significantly downsized. The strategy devised by the High Representative last March envisaged support amounting to EUR 40 billion, which was then reduced to EUR 5 billion due to the opposition of the capitals—an evident failure for Kallas, with the only success being the commitment to supply ammunition.
The High Representative nevertheless flaunts optimism, and in her explanation, while responding to a parliamentary question, looks at the positive side of the matter. The fact that around 80 percent of the promised ammunition has been delivered means that “the EU and its Member States remain committed to provide Ukraine and its people with all the necessary political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support, for as long as it takes and as intensely as needed.”
