Brussels – Democratic Party MEP Alessandra Moretti received written threats and a photograph showing a man holding a firearm in a letter which, according to sources close to the MEP, was signed by ‘Potere al Popolo’, the radical left-wing party founded in December 2017. Moretti said: “I am not one to be frightened, nor do I allow myself to be intimidated by the numerous violent threats I have received.” The intimidation is said to relate to her work in scientific research, particularly on vaccination campaigns, the role of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the management of migrants, and human rights.
“Once again, I will continue my work with dedication and commitment, carrying on with the causes that define me. I have filed a complaint because I believe that the perpetrators of such acts should be punished as provided for by law,” she added. Women who take a public stand in politics, journalism, or other fields are often the target of unprecedented acts of hatred that must never be dismissed or downplayed as mere student pranks. Those who make threats, or who resort to violence and intimidation, must be punished.”
Standing by her side is the Democratic Party delegation, which expressed “its strongest condemnation of the extremely serious threats” made against the MEP. “This is a cowardly and unacceptable act that affects not only a Member of the European Parliament, but the free exercise of democratic representation. Our full solidarity, our affection and our support go out to Alessandra,” reads the delegation’s press release. “We have confidence in the work of the judiciary and the police to ensure that those responsible are swiftly identified and that all liability is established, including the actual origin of the letter,” the delegation added. “We stand, and will continue to stand, by Alessandra Moretti. No intimidation will deter us from our commitment to defending democracy, fundamental rights and European values.”
