Brussels – As regards the aviation sector, “at present, there is no immediate threat to the security of supply, although stocks of some
fuels are tight,” said the Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, in response to a parliamentary question. The EU Commissioner seeks to calm concerns over potential shocks in the aviation sector, stressing that there is still sufficient jet fuel to meet current demand.
As regards fuel prices, however, the Commission notes that, in the face of the rise in energy prices and the reduction in deliveries due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, “European airlines have been less impacted than
US or Asian carriers due to fuel hedging policies on parts of their supply.” Consequently, Tzitzikostas concludes, “the
effect on airlines’ operating costs is partly mitigated.”
higher airline operating costs, strong seasonal demand, geopolitical disruptions affecting
operations and fuel prices, and capacity constraints in certain markets or periods.”
