Brussels – The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published an opinion on the Proposal to reform the Regulation governing Europol, the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation. The text would substantially expand the Agency’s remit and data-processing capabilities, allowing it to process data relating to individuals with no established links to criminal investigations or proceedings, for an extended and unspecified period.  “We cannot sacrifice fundamental rights in pursuit of security,” said the Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski. “This Proposal creates serious risks…(and) must provide robust safeguards and real oversight.” The EDPS supports the aim of strengthening Europol’s role, but calls for stricter limits on the purposes and retention of data, as well as clear criteria for determining when processing is genuinely necessary, alongside clearer rules on access to and supervision of the systems.
