EU disburses another 2.86 billion euros to Ukraine, bringing total aid to 231.5 billion euros

Since 2022, when the war between Russia and Ukraine began, Europe has pledged this much for the defence of Kyiv. A further 29.6 billion is to be disbursed by 2026. Kubilius: “Peace through strength”

Brussels – Further funding for Ukraine to help it counter Russia’s military attacks. The European Commission approved the disbursement of a further 2.86 billion euros, earmarked – according to sources in Brussels- for drones, air defence systems, missiles, radar, electronic warfare systems and ammunition. The contribution is an instalment of the wider loan package totalling 90 billion euros pledged by EU heads of state and government in December 2025, which allocates most of the money toward Kyiv’s military needs.

With this contribution, the total economic and financial support provided to Ukraine since 2022, the year the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began, rises to 231.5 billion euros. The largest component of this aid comes from resources and guarantees from the European Union budget (117.3 billion), broken down as follows: the special financial instrument for Ukraine, the Ukraine Facility (43.9 billion), macro-financial assistance (43.3 billion), a support loan (19.8 billion), loans and guarantees from the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (2.8 billion), humanitarian assistance (1.4 billion) and ‘other aid’ (6.1 billion for measures in the field of nuclear cooperation, aid for displaced persons, school reconstruction and immediate crisis response).

In addition to these 117.3 billion euros from the various items in the common budget, there is military aid (77.9 billion euros), EU funds for refugee support (17 billion euros), bilateral national aid (15.5 billion euros), and proceeds from Russian assets frozen on EU soil (3.8 billion euros). This brings the subtotal to 231.5 billion euros.

These figures are set to rise, given that for the remainder of 2026, Ukraine still has 29.64 billion euros in financial support. This amount includes 25.24 billion euros to be disbursed as part of the Ukraine Support Loan, of which 12.54 billion euros is earmarked for strengthening the country’s defence industrial capacity and 12.7 billion euros for budgetary support. In addition, 4.4 billion euros remain available for the current year to support the budget during the initial phase of the special financial instrument for Ukraine, the Ukraine Facility. By the end of the year, therefore, Kyiv will see European aid rise to 261.1 billion euros.

“As Russia’s war continues, Europe must act with determination and speed,” said Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Security and Democracy. The new funding of 2.86 billion euros, she stressed, “is proof of our commitment to help Ukraine defend itself from Russia’s looming war of aggression.” The tone of the Defence Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius, is quite different: “The formula ‘Peace through strength’ will be implemented by ramping up strength on Ukraine’s side.”
