According to Eurostat, the EU Statistical Office, in 2025, the value of solar panels imported into the EU fell by 27.7 per cent, standing at €8.0 billion: a 4 per cent decrease in value, suggesting a fall in the average price of imported solar panels. Imports of biofuels also fell, reaching a value of €2.7 billion in the EU (a decrease of 7.9 per cent compared with the previous year). The volume of imports also fell, recording a decline of 11.6 per cent. Exports of biofuels from the EU reached a value of €1.0 billion, marking a fall of 45.9 per cent in value and 46.2 per cent in volume compared with the previous year. Of the three product categories, wind turbines recorded the highest export value (€3.1 billion). Compared with the previous year, there was an increase in both value (10.8 per cent) and volume (9.5 per cent).
In 2025, China remained by far the leading supplier of solar panels, accounting for 98.6 per cent of total imports and thus maintaining its dominant position. As regards liquid biofuels, Malaysia was the leading supplier, with a share of 21.9 per cent, followed by the United States (16.1 per cent), Argentina (12.4 per cent), and the United Kingdom (12.3 per cent). China no longer features among the main trading partners: imports of biofuels from this country have in fact fallen from 24.2 per cent of the total in 2024 to just 1.3 per cent in 2025, while Malaysia and the United States have increased their exports to the EU, rising from 15.3 per cent and 8.4 per cent, respectively, in 2024.
In 2025, the main sources of wind turbine imports were China (59.6 per cent) and India (22.2 per cent). Compared with 2024, China increased its share from 41.3 per cent, overtaking India as the leading supplier.
