Bruxelles – Inflation rises in October. According to a flash estimate by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, the rate in the euro area is set to stand at 4.0 per cent, up from 3.8 per cent in September. The rise is due to high energy prices. Analysing the main components of inflation in the eurozone, it is estimated that in October the highest annual rate will be for energy (20.8 per cent from 18.9 per cent in September), followed by services (3.3 per cent from 3.2 per cent in September), food, alcohol and tobacco (1.6 per cent from 1.3 per cent in September) and non-energy industrial goods (1.2 per cent, from 1.1 per cent in September).

According to preliminary estimates, Italy is expected to record one of the highest rates among eurozone countries, at 5.6 per cent (the same as Greece) from 4.2 per cent in September, representing the largest monthly increase (+1.2 per cent). Higher rates are estimated in Lithuania (6.1 per cent) and Bulgaria (6 per cent). Conversely, inflation is forecast to fall in Malta (-1 per cent), Luxembourg (-0.4 per cent) and Germany (-0.1 per cent), while remaining stable in Slovakia and Portugal.
