Brussels – The new “College-Gate” investigation produced its second casualty:  Federica Mogherini resigned today from her post as Rector of the College of Europe. Yesterday, Stefano Sannino stepped down from his position as Director‑General at the European Commission. The two, questioned and then formally investigated on Tuesday over alleged favoritism by the European External Action Service at the College of Europe in relation to the organization of a diplomatic academy, chose to step down from their posts, even while declaring their innocence, as the matter has only just begun to unfold.

“In line with the utmost rigour and fairness with which I always carried out my duties, today I decided to resign as Rector of the College of Europe and Director of the European Union Diplomatic Academy,” Mogherini wrote in a statement.

“I am sure that the College community across our three campuses will continue on the path to innovation and excellence that we have charted together over these past wonderful five years,” she added. “I am proud of what we have achieved together, and I am deeply grateful for the trust, esteem, and support that students, faculty, staff, and Alumni of the College and the Academy have shown and are showing to me.”

“It has been an honor and a pleasure for me to serve the College community and its mission,” she concluded.
