“Europe, like you’ve never read before” – this is Eunews’ tagline, displayed at the very top of our homepage. In our ‘About Us’ section, which is located at the bottom of the homepage, we explain that “Eunews is for both citizens and businesses interested in independent, critical and first-hand information on European current affairs: from political agendas to measures that affect our country at all regulation and legislation levels,” and that Eunews aims “to support the construction of informed public opinion on Europe in Italy and offers a direct line to EU decision makers.”
The meeting with Marco Cappato and our colleagues from “EUMANS – Citizens for Democracy and Sustainability” reignited a dormant spark, now lighting the way for our newspaper and its readers,
“Starting today, we are launching a new column, ‘Eumans: Pan‑European Citizens on the Move’. It aims—still using the metaphor of a spark—to shed light on a vision of democracy that “must be based on direct interaction between citizens,” the goal of Eumans, which stresses that European democracy “can truly flourish when people of different nationalities begin to engage directly with one another, without the mediation of political parties and national institutions.” This is one dimension of the issue. There are political and business considerations as well, but this is likely the most important: only by starting from citizens—their needs and their mutual understanding—can the European Union (and even beyond the 27 Member States, and within each of the 27) gain a genuine spirit, authentic participation, and become a true union of peoples and wills.
We are therefore delighted to offer this space of ours, in Italian and English, to Marco Cappato and the EUMANS activists, who will be sharing updates on their work with us a couple of times a month in the column ‘EUMANS Pan-European Citizens on the Move’.
