Brussels – UniCredit’s acquisition of Commerzbank goes ahead. The Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, sends a clear signal to the German government, which continues to hold up the operation. “I have always been a supporter of the free market and of the banking union, and Europe must take a step forward” in this regard, he emphasised at the end of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting. “Until there is a genuine common market, we will always have problems,” such as the one in question, he added, calling on Germany to step aside. “I have no objection to European deals taking place in Italy, and I am not surprised by Italian deals taking place in other countries.” In other words: do not stand in the way of UniCredit’s acquisition of Commerzbank. Not least because, as Tajani further emphasises, “I do not believe that UniCredit’s deal is hostile” or detrimental to German interests.
