Brussels – Fourteen leaders of European Union member states, on the sidelines of the European Council meeting currently taking place in Brussels, are welcoming the latest political developments regarding migration management. In a press release, Palazzo Chigi explained that the informal meeting on the subject was hosted by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni together with the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, and the Dutch Prime Minister, Rob Jetten. Meloni emphasised the urgency of “moving swiftly from defining the new rules to their practical implementation, starting with the Return Regulation.”

Alongside Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the European Commission, the following countries took part in the meeting: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Poland, Malta, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, and Hungary.

In addition to acknowledging the developments of recent days, including the latest regarding the new return regulation approved in the plenary of the European Parliament on Wednesday (17 June), and the most recent inclusion of a reference to EU financial support for innovative solutions to migration issues as part of the negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, “the leaders expressed their appreciation for the results achieved.” These include the establishment of the European list of safe countries of origin, the introduction of the new concept of a “safe third country,” and the adoption of the Chisinau Declaration on migration by the Council of Europe.
