Brussels – “On the issue of migration, this Commission continues to show its worst side. Following the fiasco regarding third countries and return hubs, with the revision of Frontex’s mandate, it now also wants to allow repatriations directly from third countries. And as if that weren’t enough, with procedures defined on a case-by-case basis according to individual agreements with those countries.” This was the comment made by PD MEP Cecilia Strada to today’s (27 October) proposal by the European Commission to strengthen Frontex for returns.
“We are at an unprecedented level of discretion – efficiency is the last thing on anyone’s mind. The right wing, which is following in Vannacci’s footsteps, wants to deport migrants wherever it sees fit, preferably out of the public eye, while this Commission wants to transform Frontex into the European Agency for Returns as part of an increasingly ruthless deportation policy,” she added. “We are facing yet another chapter in a process of border externalisation that is the obsession of Europe’s right-wing parties. And it is deeply troubling to hear from Commissioner Brunner that the Commission would like to apply a similar system to the management of asylum procedures next year. We do not want Frontex to become a copy of Trump’s ICE, let alone see more and more EU resources being used to fund its implementation,” she concluded.
