Brussels – According to the Belga news agency, most Belgian military personnel will cover their faces during the 21 July parade, Belgium’s national holiday.

Defense Minister Theo Francken wants to enhance the safety of military staff. As stated in the official communiqué, the decision was motivated by increasing threats in the digital sphere. “The minister wishes to shield soldiers from facial recognition and artificial intelligence.” The note adds that “The parade is broadcast publicly, and such footage could be exploited to identify military personnel.”

Until now, this precaution had been reserved for elite units such as the Special Forces. Now, however, it will apply to all operational personnel participating in the parade. The only exception will be students, such as cadets of the Royal Military Academy.

As early as last week, the Belgian military covered their faces during a ceremony in London. Even back in June, it happened in a farewell to the king who was leaving on a state trip, although on that occasion, it took place inside a military airport.
