Brussels – The Minister for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, has written a letter to the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, calling for the protection of Italian geographical indications.
“The promotion and protection of Italian PDOs has always been a priority for the Meloni government. To reiterate this once again, I have written a letter to the EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, asking him to implement a series of concrete measures to counter attempts to transform our geographical indications (GI) into generic designations, with the aim of allowing their free production and marketing abroad, causing serious damage to our businesses in the sector,” explained Lollobrigida, adding that, on Italy’s initiative, “the ‘EU Action Plan for GIs’ and the attack on our protected designations in third-country markets will be at the centre of a debate amongst agriculture ministers at the forthcoming Agrifish Council in Brussels.”
