Brussels – According to Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, electricity generated from renewable sources in the European Union is on the rise: in the first quarter of the year, it stood at 45.5 per cent, up from 42.7 per cent recorded in the same quarter of 2025.
The winner is wind power , which was the main source of renewable electricity in the EU , accounting for 44.9 per cent of the total , compared with 42.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2025. Hydropower came second with 28 per cent, followed by solar power with 17.3 per cent. The remainder of renewable electricity came from renewable fuels (9.4 per cent) and from geothermal and other energy sources (0.4 per cent).
Among EU countries, the highest shares of electricity from renewable sources were generated in Denmark (90 per cent, mainly from wind power), Portugal (82.9 per cent, largely from hydropower), and Lithuania (75.7 per cent, mainly from wind power). By contrast, the lowest shares were recorded in the Czech Republic (12.7 per cent), Malta (13 per cent), and Slovakia (17.2 per cent). Italy, sixteenth out of the twenty-seven, recorded a share of 40.7 per cent.
