Ukraine and EU reach new trade agreement

The goal is to establish a long-term relationship of stability and predictability

Brussels – The European Commission has concluded negotiations with Ukraine on the revision of the DCFTA (Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area), marking a step towards the integration and ever-closer union of the two markets.

The new trade relations are about free trade between the two countries, bringing Ukraine closer to the union’s internal market, especially in agriculture, to establish a long-term relationship of stability and predictability.

The intention is also to once again firmly demonstrate the commitment to supporting Ukraine. As Ursula von der Leyen reiterated, “With this modernised agreement, we are securing trade flows from Ukraine to Europe and global markets. We are also building bridges of resilience and economic solidarity in the face of Russia’s unjustified war of aggression.” According to von der Leyen, “at the same time, we continue to protect the interests of our farmers. Ukraine’s place is in our family. We remain committed to a path of mutual growth and stability, which will lead to its full integration into our Union.”

Both sides will work to finalise the technical elements of the agreement. The Member States and the European Parliament will be informed of the agreement’s details in the coming days.

The EU and Ukraine will now proceed with their respective procedures for the formal approval of the revised free trade agreement. Subsequently, the agreement will be formally adopted by the EU-Ukraine Association Committee.
