Merkel and other eight EPP leaders want “lessons on the EU” at school

The EPP Manifesto, part of the electoral platform, calls for a fight against eurosceptics. “We need to prepare next generations to future challenges, growing a common approach.”

It would be necessary to study “EU education” to fight “ignorance” and the increasing number of eurosceptics, said Angela Merkel. The German Chancellor, together with other eight leaders of the European People’s Party (EPP), has signed a Manifesto, part of the electoral platform, stating that such a program would help improving the public image of Brussels.

The document, launched during the EPP Congress in Dublin, was signed by leaders of Ireland, Poland, Spain, Hungary, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Latvia too. It calls for the introduction of “EU education in schools across Europe in order to prepare the next generation for future challenges and to nurture to a European approach.” According to the document, “Europe has been in crisis for more than five years. Many people, especially the young, do not foresee a positive future,” hence “euroscepticism is growing.” Yet, “united we can make sure that young people look at the future with optimism, hope and confidence.”
